Reagan makes the remark which in the retelling becomes "You've seen
one tree, you've seen them all." But his actual words are, "A tree's a
tree. How many more do you need to look at?" He proposes preserving
a belt of trees on each side of the road for scenic value and cutting
the rest. He repeats the sentiment six weeks later, but adds that "I'm
a fellow who bleeds every time a tree is cut down." On September 13 he
states that he believes nothing of the kind and on October 5 he claims
that he never said it.
