Events of March 11 in THE REAGAN YEARS:

1966:  Reagan makes the remark which in the retelling becomes "You've seen one tree, you've seen them all." But his actual words are, "A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?" He proposes preserving a belt of trees on each side of the road for scenic value and cutting the rest. He repeats the sentiment six weeks later, but adds that "I'm a fellow who bleeds every time a tree is cut down." On September 13 he states that he believes nothing of the kind and on October 5 he claims that he never said it.
1983:  Reagan calls critics of Anne Gorsuch Burford, who recently resigned in disgrace as head of the corruption-tainted Environmental Protection Agency, "environmental extremists." He adds, "I don't think they'll be happy until the White House looks like a bird's nest."
